Good luck!
Many stay at home moms are working as home-based travel agents, so this should be a good fit for you.
One word of caution: Your airline experience will probably be of limited use, since airlines don’t pay commissions. Still, you are probably a stickler for detail because of that experience and that will serve you in good stead.
My advice would be to concentrate on one or two areas. Many stay at home moms specialize i9n family travel, for example, since they are constantly in contact with their prime market.
The basic idea of being a home-based travel agent is to form a business relationship with a bonded travel agency, which lets you “piggyback” on their industry accreditation. Then you find the customers, makes the bookings, and funnel them through the agency and split the resulting commission with the agency.
That’s it in a nutshell, but there are many, many permutations and combinations. For example, commissions splits can range fro 50/50 to 80/20 (in your favor). Most agencies charge sign up fees, sometimes several thousand dollars, but others charge no fee at all.
You can to do your research and avoid the temptation to fall for the first seductive “business opportunity” you find on the web.
But it’s a fun, exciting and rewarding career that will allow you to design a business to suit your (and your kids’) schedule.
Good luck!
